9/10/2021 The Art Angle Podcast - featuring Simon Aldridge
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.
Thousands of people who worked at the trade center or who witnessed the events of 9/11, or who lost loved ones, have stories about that. Among these are the artists of the World Views Artists Residency.
In a terrible irony, the Port Authority started the residency to try to draw businesses back to unused office space following the earlier 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Run by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, World Views gave each cohort all-hours access to the building and six months of workspace on the 91st and 92nd floors of the north tower.
As the name suggests, World Views brought applicants from around the world, drawn to the prestige of New York and the chance to make work in such a unique space with its dramatic views of the city. Naomi Ben-Shahar, Monika Bravo, Simon Aldridge, and Jeff Konigsberg were four of the 15 artists participating in the World Views Residency in 2001.
Amid the commemorations and reflections on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we asked them to share their memories of the space, of the tragic day, and how the experience shaped their lives and work thereafter.

Landscapes after Ruskin: Redefining the Sublime explores contemporary painting, photography, sculpture, and video through the lens of influential English art critic and social thinker John Ruskin (1819–1900), who argued that the artist’s principal responsibility is “truth to nature.” For Ruskin, this “truth” was more than just a technical representation of the natural world on canvas but also a depiction of it as experienced by humankind. In Landscapes after Ruskin, guest curator and artist Joel Sternfeld examines how, in a world overwhelmed by industrial development and environmental uncertainty, contemporary artists are discovering new beauties and terrors associated with nature and, in so doing, invoking an updated sense of the sublime. The exhibition features a wide range of works by over fifty artists, including Simon Aldridge, Richard Artschwager, Christiane Baumgartner, Katherine Bradford, Spencer Finch, Neil Jenney, Raymond Pettibon, Michal Rovner, Ai Weiwei, and David Wojnarowicz, among others. Organized by the Hall Art Foundation, the exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

TOOLBOOK Launch Party at SOHO20
On Friday September 29th, the official launch party for Tool Book, a collaborative project by 2017 Artist in Residence, Sarah G. Sharp, will take place at SOHO20 Gallery in Brooklyn. During the event, contributors will read and perform poems, songs and other texts related to Tool Book.
Tool Book is a compilation of the texts, images and objects that edify, inspire, support and radicalize - in a time of deep uncertainty and resistance. Simon Aldridge created a special series of collaged photo drawings to be included in the book, edifying how we connect with each other in our shocking political moment, and provide a way to raise needed funds to protect our most threatened communities and values.
